Coinbase Releases May Outage Report: AWS Data Center Failure Caused 8-Hour Disruption, Regional Redundancy Upgrade Planned
Coinbase released a postmortem on the May 7 outage that disrupted trading, deposits, withdrawals, and other core services for about eight hours, with full recovery taking roughly 12 hours. The incident was caused by the simultaneous failure of multiple cooling units at an AWS us-east-1 availability zone, which triggered server shutdowns due to overheating. Coinbase said the outage exposed shortcomings in its failover and disaster recovery systems and plans to strengthen regional redundancy, expand Kafka from two to three availability zones, and increase resilience testing.
