Brazil’s largest private bank, Itaú Unibanco, notified the central bank of its cryptocurrency trading and custody operations on October 27, becoming the country’s first bank to do so under the new digital-asset rules. The framework allows banks already authorized by the central bank to offer crypto services through a notification process, while dedicated virtual-asset service providers must apply for operating authorization. The deadline for existing operators to submit notifications or applications is October 30. Itaú has offered crypto services since December 2023 and currently supports 15 cryptoassets.
