U.S. CPI Meets Forecast at 3.4%, but Core Inflation Runs Hotter Than Expected
U.S. CPI rose 0.4% month-over-month and 3.4% year-over-year in August, both in line with expectations. Core CPI increased 0.3% month-over-month, above the 0.2% consensus, while the annual core rate eased to 2.4% from 2.5%. Gasoline prices jumped 3.9% during the month and accounted for more than one-third of the overall CPI increase.
